WORD SPREADS ABOUT GOLI!
The mother pictured brought her daughter to MAI supported EPC Goli Hospital. The child had a fever and was vomiting. Admitted to the ward from Out Patients, the girl was treated successfully for malaria.
However, the only reason that the woman brought her daughter was because the chief of her area had attended a community information session run last July by EPC with Dr John Gilbert, a MAI Trustee. He told her that she would find help there.
Taking her child home she said that she would make sure her family and community knew that the Hospital had really helped her. "They will be very happy," she continued.
Word of mouth is helping to increase attendances at antenatal classes. In the last quarter, midwife Alice has seen increased numbers receiving Intermediate Prevntive Treatment (protects the unborn child from malaria) and vaccinations. Most women don't attend the Hospital for safe delivery of their child because witchdoctors counsel home births in situations where very few are attended by even a Traditional Birth Attendant let alone a midwife - one of South Sudan's scarcest resources!
