VOLUNTEER TEAM HEADS TO EMBO
John Earwicker is leading a team of 12 volunteers to Embo from July 21 to August 6. The team includes a doctor, several nurses and teachers. They will work alongside the Cae Givers serving HIV/Aids patients and their families. In adition, they will teach in local schools and help with the church creche.
For some, this is their first taste of sub-Saharan Africa and Embo will provide some culture shocks!
The Care Givers continue to serve over 300 families. One patient this month was admitted to hospital suffering with a strain of tuberculosis that is drug resistant. The woman is HIV positive and is on antiretrovirals. But when she was treated for TB a year ago, she stopped taking the treatment because she was better. This has led to the present complication. Her husband died 4 years ago and she has two children at school. Before being admitted to hospital, they had to live with the grandmother and, now unable to work, they depend on a small social grant for the grandmother.
