THE EMBO CHALLENGE
This woman has been nursed by one of the church Home Caregivers, having been found to be very weak, with sores, diarrhoea and a low CD4 count. Eventually, she was needing care that could only be provided by a hospice and that was arranged.
Her story illustrates the challenges facing the Home Caregivers on a daily basis. The woman who is 43 was living with her boyfriend and her 7 year old child. They are all HIV posiitve and each receiving antiretroviral treatment. No one in the household works; they depend on hand outs from the church.
The boyfriend is too ill to look after the girl and, with her mother in the hospice, the Project Supervisor is working with the social work team to locate the woman's parents, so that they can care for the vulnerable child.
Meanwhile, the woman is making a slow recovery but will need close supervision when she gets home again.
