SUDAN REFERENDUM PROCEEDING PEACEFULLY

This morning, John Earwicker spoke with Bishop Elias Taban who heads the Evangelical Presbyterian Church with whom MAI has partnered to develop a 50 bed Health facility for the marginalised Mundu community based around Goli, Southern Sudan.

He confirmed that the voting in the Referendum has been proceeding peacefully and there is real optimism that the result will be accepted.

Many observers have predicted that a return to violence may be possible, given the high likelihood of a vote for secession.  If this can be avoided, the south will still face enormous difficulties in economic and community development terms.  This is why our partnership is so strategic and making a huge impact for the Goli community.

The local Chief recently told us that EPC is the only group helping the community to develop.  EPC has not only developed the Hospital with MAI's help but has opened a primary school which recently achieved some of the best grades actross the South.  In additon, two new shops selling basic goods have opened close to the Hospital, the first initiative of its kind.

Thomas and Jillian McNeil who are serving EPC as Business Manager and Head Teacher respectively have returned to the UK during the Referendum voting period.  The temporary withdrawal of expatriate staff has been typical and this has enabled Jillian to receive further medical attention that she needs in order to return fully fit.
