PLATEAU CRISIS DEEPENS

The head of Income Generation for Vom Hospital, which MAI has been assisting since the violent clashes in Plateau State of 2003/4, Edmond Maiyaki told our Executive Director today that the violence is intensifying once again.

Before Christmas, bombings commenced in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, a new development in the clashes between Muslim and Christian people groups.

Edmond said that the violence has reached Vom, with three houses being attacked on Monday just gone with children among those killed.  5 adult casualties are being treated in Vom Hospital along with a one year old child who received gun shot wounds through the indiscriminate firing.

MAI has recently funded a solar energy facility for the Hospital's major income generation scheme, which aims to produce profits to subsidise patient treatment costs for the poor rural community of Vom.  The promise of 24 hour light and power has attracted many new bookings but there is some anxiety about the levels of violence that means many groups are deferring their events at the Guest House and Conference Centre.
