The Nigerian Acting High Commissioner to the UK has praised MAI's work at Vom Hospital. "At a time when you should have been leaving, you came to our aid," he said. "Keep going."
His words were spoken in a gathering at the Nigerian Embassy during the recent UK visit of Mr Barnabas Dusu. He is the Chairman of Vom Hospital Enterprises. His visit was to assist MAI inraising funds to etend the Vom Guest House, a successful first stage of our income generation plans. Good progress has been made and we hope that the extension will be begun in the coming months, so as to enhance the sustainable funds available to employ a surgeon and related staff members. FIRST MEDICAL TEAM TO SUDAN |
Dr John Gilbert and nurse, Mrs Leanne Finlay, have returned from Sudan. During their visit in March, they spent tme with staff and patients at the EPC hospital in Goli (built with funds from MAI and WorldShare) and at the Lora Orphanage (where MAI funds a community clinic).
Dr Gilbert (pictured above) is one of MAI's newest Board members. "This is an amazing example of the church in action", he told us. Having spent time to encourage local staff, John has returned with vision and passion to enable the project to move forward. He is excited about a German medical couple who will be arriving at the end of April. He plans to mentor them as they raise up local staff and standards.
Leanne Finlay, a nurse who accompanied Dr Gilbert, said: "I will never be the same again." She was deeply moved by the level of need she witnessed. She amd Dr Gilbert were asked to give medicals to 37 orphans, being admitted to the facility at Lora. Typically, they found that 27 of them were positive for malaria; one of Sudan's major challenges. MAGNFICENT SEVEN BRING SCOTTISH STYLE TO SUDAN! |
A team of seven volunteers from East Kilbride brought Scottish style to the MAI project with EPC (led by Bishop Taban) and WorldShare late last year.
They brought needed skills and manpower for an action packed week. They completed the electrical installation work for the In Patient facilities at the Goli Health Centre but the delay to other supplies, caused by road obstacles, meant that they completed an essential but unfinished garage facility for the EPC compound in Yei.
Having raised their own travel and subsistence costs, as well as having supplied a fantastic amount of tools, the team recently donated a balance of £2,000 to MAI for the work in Sudan. Full Article |

SUDAN TOUR SUCCESS |
Our Sudan partner, Bishop Elias Taban, has completed another highly successful tour of the UK.
Visiting places as far apart as Fleet in Hampshire to Irvine in Scotland, Bishop Taban made many new friends.
The purpose of the tour was to report on progress with the Hospital project at Goli, Southern Sudan and to raise volunteers and funds to help with the next stages.
With the Out Patient Department complete and staff in place, patients are flocking to the new facility. The next phase is to complete the second block which will provide two wards (maternity and gynaecology) and two operating theatres. This will include all windows, doors, tiling, flooring, electrical and wet services.
The cost per bed space is about £2,000 and 16 of the 20 bed spaces have been funded during the tour. The appeal continues for the remaining four. Full Article
