MAI EARLY ADOPTER OF NEW MOBILE PHONE INITIATIVE

Medic Assist International is one of the first charities in the country to use its own, unique personalised text code, MEDI22, to raise funds using JustTextGiving by Vodafone.  Katrina and her baby, pictured, were the first to donate to MAI by mobile phone.

This is a brand new, free service for charities that has no set up or fundraising costs for charities, no network charges for people making donations and every penny donated goes to charity.  Gift Aid can also be added to donations.

Now, supporters of Medic Assist International can make donations of up to £10 by texting MEDI22 and either £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10 to 70070 to make their donation.  The text message is free and all of the donation will be passed to the charity.

John Earwicker of MAI said: “This is a wonderful way for us to raise money as it is speedy, simple and spontaneous.  Most people have a mobile phone these days so we expect this to be very popular with our supporters.”

“A gift of £10 enables a family affected by Aids to receive care for a month or secures a day’s pay for a scarce midwife in Southern Sudan where 1 in 7 pregnant women die from pregnancy related causes.  A gift of £2 pays for a pregnant mother to receive drugs that will lessen the likelihood of her unborn child being affected by malaria.  A gift of £5 helps buy a life saving treated malaria net.  Small sums go a long way in the places where we work, which include Nigeria, Sudan and KwaZulu Natal.”
