GREAT NEWS FOR EMBO!
In a community of more than 60,000, Embo has no health clinic. In oreder to be tested for HIV, people must travel many miles which deters many from checking their status. Because of the great work by our Partners, a government mobile clinic does visit once a month, parking in the church car park! And this frequency will be increased once a room within the church is fully adapted as a Consultation Room through a grant from a Foundation in Northern Ireland that MAI obtained on their behalf.
BUT, the good news is that the 10 volunteer Home Care Givers, whom MAI provide with a stipend, have been approved for official training as Volunteer Testers and Counsellors. This means that this team will be able to offer testing for HIV within the community and be able to counsel their clients in addition to providing unconditional love and practical support. By law in South Africa, anyone qualified to test for HIV MUST also offer counselling! MAI plans to fund this training in 2010.
A great Christmas present for the people of Embo!
