BISHOP TABAN ASKS FOR PRAYERS AHEAD OF REFERENDUM
Bishop Elias Taban has asked Christians who support MAI and their partnership project in Sudan to pray (and encourage their churches to do so) as Southern Sudan comes close to the Referendum on Secession.
He notes that there have been attacks by the North on the border and that peace is increasingly fragile. It appears that troops are massing on the border between North and South with the potential for a return to violence if the North refuses to accept the outcome of the referendum in which it is likely that southerners will vote for independence.
Registration has been completed with few difficulties, although very few southerners living in the north have registered, compared to estimates of their numbers. Many have been returning south, using vehicles laid on by the regional government.
Bishop Taban has offered the following points for prayer:
- Pray that the referendum would take place as scheduled (9 to 15 January) and that the vote would be free, fair and peaceful
- Pray for the leaders of both North and South Sudan, that God would act through them to maintain peace
- Pray for the people of Southern Sudan, that their vote would accomplish the will of God for the nation of Sudan
- Pray that the leaders of both North and South Sudan would accept the will of the people and would ensure a peaceful implementation of the result
- Pray for the church in both North and South Sudan, that God would use the referendum as an opportunity to grow His church in both places
- Pray for Christians in North Sudan, that they would not experience additional persecution either during or after the referendum
- Pray that the free, fair and peaceful elections in Sudan would bring glory to God throughout the world
