Welcome to Medic Assist International
BIG GIVE CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE - WOW!
MAI participated in the Big Give Christmas Challenge for the first time this year.....and the results were amazing! We were optimistic in setting a target of £5,000 to be donated online during the Challenge week (5 - 9 December).
You amazed us and - despite huge problems caused by an enormous number of donors eager to give to the 424 charities involved which overwhelmed the Big Give website most days and prevented many of you from donating to MAI's EMBO project - you gave £5,306!!!
The first £5,000 of this has been fully matched thanks to our Pledge and Sponsor Fund donors. Add on gift aid and deduct the admin fee, it looks like you have helped us raise a staggering £12,281.70 for our EMBO Fund. Thank you!
SUDAN CONFLICT!
The Foreign Minister of South Sudan told the BBC recently that the two Sudan's are once more on the brink of war. After claim and counter claim, tension is high in the border regions.
Although the border is a long way from our Partnership Project in Goli, Central Equatoria, this is bad news for the emergent nation of South Sudan. The closure of the border by President Bashir last June has already led to huge rises in the cost of fuel in the South.
Our Partner, Bishop Taban, has called for prayers. In particular, he is concerned for the displaced persons who have fled the violence in the four provinces involved (two in the north - South Kordofan and Blue Nile - and two in the south - Unity and Upper Nile). Food is a massive issue for them.
In contrast, Dr John Gilbert - MAI Board member - has just returned from a visit to Goli where he has undertaken further on the job training with the medical team. We are expecting that a Congolese surgeon may be in the pipeline early next year. And all the necessary funds for a solar installation at the Hospital and also the staff accommodation has been raised in full! Thank you!
Our Vision
Medic Assist International exists to save and enhance the lives of vulnerable, poor or oppressed people through the provision of healthcare by indigenous people of vision, integrity and competence.
Our vision is not to have hundreds of projects carrying the MAI name around the globe. Most people receiving treatments will not recognize our logo.
Rather, our vision is to empower and enable local people to provide healthcare facilities and services by providing start up funding and support from UK volunteers.
Help Us
Short term volunteers are essential to the work of Medic Assist International. These are people who give a minimum of a week and a maximum of a month to work alongside our Partners and their staff.
Our Partners have received many MAI volunteers: orthopaedic and plastic surgeons, GPs, nurses and midwives, business consultants, builders with a variety of trades and enthusiastic DIYers!
Why not register as a volunteer and explore the opportunities to make a difference among needy people?
You Can Help
MAI is a voluntary organization. We depend on the many individuals who support our aims. That is where YOU come in! What may seem a small contribution to you can make a huge difference to someone suffering ill health in the developing world.
There are two ways in which you can help.
Donate or Volunteer
One of our Partners says "Give us a push and we will roll!"
Giving money brings antenatal care to women at high risk of losing their babies. It funds new facilities and basic treatments that are unavailable for miles around.
Monthly gifts between £4 and £25 for a limited period get things started and sustained until local income generation schemes kick in.
Volunteering your skills for a week or so, whether you are a Consultant, GP, nurse, electrician, plumber or DIY fanatic can make a real difference in encouraging and training local professionals.
